Nepali cricket fans, who felt Pubudu Dassanayake was the ideal man for the team under Sandeep Lamichhane’s captaincy, were taken aback by the unfolding of developments in his story.
Hours after Dassanayake announced his resignation as Nepal coach on Wednesday, Canada confirmed his appointment as their national team coach.
“Pubudu Dassanayake appointed as Our New Head Coach!” Cricket Canada posted on its twitter handle.
Incidentally, this is his second stint as head coach of Canada, having earlier served in the position for five years between 2007 till 2011.
The fans reacted angrily to Dassanayake’s decision to switch allegiance from Nepal to Canada.
“Huh?,I want to give time to my family, can't travel outside of Canada…” Karky_tapendra wrote on his twitter handle, referring to Dassanayake’s statement at the press conference that he was quitting the post due to “family reasons.”
Rohit@neorohit wrote, “Hmm....so this was the family reason? Got it.”
Similarly, Sandy Regmi made a sarcastic remark, “He will lead you towards division 4.Good luck Canada!”
Some suggested that CAN look for someone with a higher coaching pedigree to succeed Dassanayake.
“Pabudu's standard made it difficult for Nepal to score 200 runs despite having so many good players on the team. Now, they struggle to make even 150,” Kedar Gautam tweeted.
