Police have arrested a taxi driver associated with InDriver, an app-based ride service, for allegedly misusing social media to assassinate the character of a third gender person.

The arrested driver has been identified as 24-year-old Karma Wang Sing Lama, a local resident of Namobuddha Municipality-5 in Kavrepalanchok district.

According to police, Lama had sent pictures of a third gender person and contact details of a woman on social media.

During the initial investigation, it has come to light that Lama uploaded pictures of the third gender using a fake Facebook account and asked money from the friends of the victims.

Also, in the messenger group named 'Study Material', Lama allegedly posted the words of intent that another victim woman's profession was prostitution and also shared her personal details to a porn site that was given in the InDriver’s app.

Security personnel deployed from the Kathmandu-based Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police arrested him for abetting social and psychological stress, grief, and harassment by indulging in the act of character assassination.

A case has been registered against him under the Electronic Transactions Act, 2063.

Nepal Police officials say incidents of cyber crime by misusing social media platforms have risen sharply in recent years.

Despite police alerting social media users to refrain from social media misuse and abuse, complaints have not gone down.
