Nepal Minute - out of the ordinary

Climate

Domestic flights have been impacted by low visibility caused by thick fog in the Tarai-Madhes regions.

Flights were disrupted at all airports except Bhadrapur, Pokhara, Dhangadi, Surkhet, and Lumlingtar, according to the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).

TIA spokesperson Teknath Sitaula said that domestic flights could be affected in airports in the Tarai areas for a few more days due to low visibility.

Buddha Air's Information Officer Dipendra Kumar Karna shared that flights in the majority of airports in the Tarai were affected since Thursday morning due to low visibility.

He said that some airports are expected to be inoperative after 12:00pm, adding that passengers have been facing problems reaching their destination due to that.

Around 300 domestic flights are in operation daily. Buddha Air operates around 150 flights a day – the highest among the domestic carriers, followed by Yeti Airlines with 58 flights.

Twenty airline companies, including 11 helicopter companies, have been conducting domestic flights at present.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology predicted foggy weather in some places in the Tarai belt on Thursday, with cloudy conditions in most of the places in the hills.

Hilly areas in Gandaki, Lumbini, Province 1 and Bagmati Province will be partially cloudy while the weather will remain generally fair in the remaining provinces, according to the Met Office.
