The government is developing an 81 MW run-of-the-river power project on the Budhigandaki river in Gorkha.

Chilime Hydropower Company, which has been tasked with building the project, is preparing an environmental study report for the project’s construction in Chumanubri Rural Municipality in north of the district.

The project will build a nine-metre high dam near Gapa of Chumanubri Rural Municipality-4. From there, the water will be channelled through a 4,365-metre tunnel to the powerhouse to be built near Bihi of Chumanubri Rural Municipality-5.

The water will then be discharged through the tailrace tunnel back to the river. The electricity generated from the project will be connected to the proposed sub-station at Philim or Gumda through 15km-long 220kV transmission line.

The project has issued a public notice, requesting suggestions from stakeholders near the project site to determine possible natural, physical, biological, social, cultural, and economic impacts that the project would have in the area.

The government is also preparing to build another project with a capacity of 1,200 MW on the Budhigandaki river.
