Nepal Minute - out of the ordinary

Climate

As the minimum temperatures across the southern plains dip considerably, authorities in Nawalparasi have started preparations to prevent the possible casualty from winter and cold waves.

Forecasting chilly conditions in Nepal for the next three-four days, the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology attributed that to the low-pressure system over the northern Indian state of Bihar.

A meeting of the District Disaster Management Committee decided to endorse and implement Cold Wave Emergency Action Plan 2079. The meeting, chaired by Chief District Officer Shravan Kumar Pokharel, was attended people's representatives, political parties, security agencies and agencies concerned.

The cold weather in Tarai districts, including Nawalparasi, affects mainly the poor, pregnant women, children and senior citizens. Hence, necessary preparations have been made to protect the target groups, said CDO Pokharel.

The Division Forest Office has been instructed to provide firewood at a minimum cost to arrange fireplaces in various places of the district to help people stay warm. The committee has also decided to maintain a stock of warm clothes, including blankets.

Meanwhile, the authorities have also requested the media to publish and broadcast information about the measures to avoid the cold wave. Considering the risk of road accidents due to cold waves and fog, they have uged transport entrepreneurs to make mandatory provision of fog lights in vehicles.

Similarly, CDO Pokharel said it had been decided to stick reflective tapes or stickers on students' school bags.

Member of Lumbini Provincial Assembly Baijanath Jaiswal urged local governments and organisations concerned to prepare for any mishap and maintain stock of disaster rescue and relief materials.
