Nepal Minute - out of the ordinary

Nepal

The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has announced it will clear the mess of cables along the Tripureshwor-Budhanilkantha route.

In a public notice on Tuesday, the NEA has said that it will remove the wires, including optical fibres, as well as equipment fixed haphazardly to the electric poles.

On November 1, the NEA issued a notice giving internet service providers a 45-day ultimatum to manage television, internet, telephone wires, and equipment strung on utility poles.

In the strongly-worded notice, the state utility warned that it would start cutting off and removing the cables from the poles unless the ISPs complied.

The NEA decided to take down the unmanaged cables on its own after reluctance from the internet service providers to do so.

In the first phase, the state utility will start pulling down cables from the electric poles at Tripureshwor, Sundhara, Ratnapark, Keshar Mahal, Lainchaur, Lazimpat and Narayan Gopal Chowk all the way up north to Budhanilkantha.

Referring to Article 19 of NEA Act, 1984, the state utility said it will not be responsible for any possible loss during the removal of wires.

It has apologised for any inconvenience to telephone, internet, and cable TV users as a result of its action.
