Three earthquakes jolted Baglung district and surrounding areas of western Nepal in the wee hours of Wednesday.
According to National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center, a government agency that monitors earthquakes, the earthquakes were recorded in the western hill district of Baglung, located west of Pokhara.
A 5.3ML earthquake, with the epicentre at Khunga, Baglung, was recorded at 2:07am local time. It was preceded by a foreshock of 4.7ML at 1:23am local time and followed by an aftershock of 4ML at 3:28am.
According to the NEMRC Twitter posts, both foreshock and aftershock had their epicentre at Adhkari Chaur, Baglung.
NEMRC further clarified that these quakes are totally new earthquakes and are not aftershocks of the Gorkha Earthquake of 2015.
But by the time of writing, NEMRC was yet to publish reports of all of the three jolts in its official website. The website only publishes the earthquakes which are equal to higher than 4 ML. Despite being of greater magnitude NEMRC's website was largely silent and only reported the quakes via its Twitter handle.
According to USGS, the US government's body which reports and keeps tracks of earthquakes worldwide, the depth of Wednesday's quake was reported to be around 20 kilometres.
The earthquakes have been recorded a little over a month after a major earthquake jolted far-western Nepal on November 9 . That had its epicentre in Doti district in Sudurpaschim Province.
Nepal is vulnerable to such quakes as it lies in the tectonic subduction zone of two major tectonic plates – where the Indian plate is sliding below the Eurasian plate.
