One person succumbed to Covid-19 on Saturday, marking the first mortality in Nepal in 75 days. The last Covid-related death in the country was reported on October 24, 2022.
A total of 12,020 people have died due to Covid-related complications since the pandemic hit the country.
Out of 555 samples sent for testing over the past 24 hours, three tested positive for the antigens, according to the Health Ministry.
While two persons have recovered in that period, there are 21 active reported cases of coronavirus infections, the ministry said.
Nepal has stepped up surveillance and is preparing its health system for a possible surge in cases of Covid-19 following a spike in infections in the neighbouring countries.
The health authorities have also urged people to don masks and return to Covid-appropriate behaviour.
The Health Ministry has asked people to get another dose of anti-Covid shots to prevent coronavirus infections.
As of December 30, 2022, 79.5 per cent of the population has taken the first dose of the anti-Covid vaccine while 27.31 per cent have taken additional doses of the vaccine, the ministry said.
Nepal has been hit by four waves of the pandemic. The worst one happened in the summer of 2021, when the country ran out of hospital beds and oxygen and thousands of people died.
