Nepal Minute - out of the ordinary

Nepal

It’s rare to see Nepal’s elected representatives enjoying beach holidays. But Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah is an exception.

This week, Balen Shah and his spouse, Sabeena Kafle, have been enjoying sightseeing around Bali.

A TikTok account called @suchanalaya.np - claiming to be that of the mayor - shared photos of the couple visiting exotic locales of the Indonesian island.

Several users liked the photos. One user wrote, “Well-deserved break.”

Later, on January 9, the post was deleted. The account has 3.9 million followers.

His spouse, Sabeena Kafle, also shared photos of the couple - clad in casual attire - visiting temples and beaches of Bali.

A KMC official confirmed that the mayor is on a “private visit” to Indonesia.

Earlier, the mayor and his spouse took to Facebook and wrote posts congratulating a Nepali team participating in PUBG Mobile Global Championship Grand Finals held in Jakarta.

Nepal’s DRS Gaming achieved a remarkable second place at the PUBG Mobile Global Championship Grand Finals on Sunday to win a whopping $200,000 (Rs26.4 million) – the biggest prize money ever in the country’s history.

It’s unclear when the mayor will return to Kathmandu. But soon after assuming office in late May, 2022, the 32-year-old mayor has remained busy clearing “encroachments” and “unauthorised constructions” in the capital city.

But, as in Thapathali Bagmati banks where squatters vehemently opposed KMC's move to drive bull dozers in the area, the mayor has been facing plenty of road blocks.
