Nepal Minute - out of the ordinary

Life & Health

The government has sought an additional 1.5 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine to deliver booster doses in light of rising infection rates in the neighbouring countries.

The Ministry of Health and Population on Thursday wrote to the ‘Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunisation (Gavi)’ for additional dispatch of vaccines. Sagar Dahal, chief of the Child Health and Immunisation Section at the Department of Health Services, confirmed the ministry's latest correspondence with Gavi.

Earlier on December 29, the government demanded 1.5 million booster dose vaccines from Gavi, which has already promised the supplies by February 2.

Dahal stated that the government decided to request for additional doses of the vaccine from Gavi in order to deliver booster doses after realising that the prior order was insufficient. “We hope Gavi will response to us soon.”

Gavi is providing Nepal with the Pfizer-BioNTech Bivalent Booster under the Covax programme.
The Health Ministry has also urged all people to take booster doses in the wake of the fast spreading of the new variant of coronavirus, BF.7, in neighboring India and China.

It has urged all to wear masks, maintain physical distancing, regularly use hand sanitiser and wash hands with soap and water to reduce the risk of infections.
