Nepal Minute - out of the ordinary

Nepal

The Office of the Attorney General has moved the Supreme Court, appealing against the Patan High Court's order to release cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane on bail.

The OAG filed a petition at the top court on Tuesday, demanding that the High Court order should be annulled and that the rape case should be continued while keeping Lamichhane in custody.

The Patan High Court on January 12 ordered his release on Rs2 million bond.

“We’ve filed a petition in the Supreme Court,” spokesperson for the AGO Sanjiv Raj Regmi said. “We’ve demanded annulation of the High Court order. The case should proceed, keeping the accused in custody.”

Lamichhane came out of prison on January 13, two months after the Kathmandu District Court remanded him to judicial custody for an investigation into rape charges against him.

On September 6, 2022, a 17-year-old girl filed a complaint at the Gaushala Police Circle, accusing Lamichhane of raping her on the night of August 21. The cricketer denies the charge.
