Nepal Minute - out of the ordinary

Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s bulldozers are back in action. One of its bulldozers targeted a Nepal Police metal stand at Maitidevi junction.

Before driving the bulldozer, municipal police personnel instructed officials to remove the goods that were inside the metal enclosure.

KMC Police Chief Raju Pandey said the stand was demolished in close coordination with Nepal Police, which agreed to move its stand away from the busy junction.

The stand was demolished because it sat on the pavement, affecting pedestrian movements.
KMC’s bulldozers started hitting Kathmandu’s streets targeting encroachments soon after Mayor Balendra Shah began his term in June, 2022.

Of late, however, the mayor is facing criticism for failing to address the concerns of low-income groups living in riverside settlements. They have been demanding an end to “bulldozer terror” unleashed by Balen Shah.

The rapper-turned-politician has yet to unveil plans to resettle squatters living on river banks such as Thapathali in the heart of Kathmandu, which is home to hundreds of settlers.
