Nepal Minute - out of the ordinary

Current Affairs

Nepal has finally sent a formal letter to the United States stating that it would not be part of the US State Partnership Program (SPP), more than a month after the Cabinet decided on the matter.

Foreign Minister Narayan Khadka on Friday informed the House of Representatives that the government sent the letter to the US on July 25 apprising it of the Nepal government’s June 21 decision - which followed heated debate on the pros and cons of SPP in and outside the parliament.

Khadka told the House: “It took some time because we had to do some internal consultations. We’ve heard some MPs expressing doubts too. But the government was and is clear on SPP. There’s no need to doubt the decision made by the parliament of a sovereign nation and the government.”

Khadka’s revelation coincides with the two-day Nepal visit of US Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asia Donald Lu, who arrived in Kathmandu on Thursday.
