Nepal Minute - out of the ordinary

Nepal

Armed with red and green lightsticks and breathalysers, traffic police take to streets every evening to check if drivers are drinking and driving.

Those found guilty are not allowed to drive and are handed down tickets imposing fines of minimum 500 rupees.

After Nepal Police started punishing individuals driving their vehicles under the influence of alcohol in 2011, officials say, the numbers of fatal road accidents have dropped significantly.

Nepal Police claims it has adopted a zero tolerance policy against drink-driving all over the country, and that it is continuing.

On average, 125 people are punished for drink driving in Kathmandu every day,.

As per the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, 170 people were caught for drinking-and-driving case in Kathmandu on Sunday.

But concerns remain over violations of other traffic rules such as mandatory use of helmets by motorcycle pillion riders, overspeeding, and rampant breech of lane discipline.
