Junior rank civil servants have continued their protest against the government’s decision to hike their salaries in what they call a “discriminatory manner” compared to that of their seniors.

The protest follows reports suggesting up to 24 percent hike in the salaries of their seniors, or gazetted officials, as opposed to a mere 15 percent hike in the salaries of the junior rank civil servants, called non-gazetted officers.

Soon after the Finance Ministry made public the new salary scale, the junior rank civil servants became agitated, gathering on the lawns and grounds of Singha Durbar premises, which house the country’s central secretariat.

According to the new salary structure, which would be effective from July 17, or Shrawan 1, a junior civil servant of Kharidar rank will draw nearly Rs 33,000 – including grades. Whereas a top civil servant of Principal Secretary rank will draw nearly Rs 80,000 including grades.
