The number of Covid positive cases in Nepal has exceeded 1,000 in the past 24 hours, indicating a new surge even as people continue to ignore health safety protocols such as masking up in crowded places.

Also, two Covid-related deaths were reported from across the country, the Ministry of Health and Population said.

Among the 6,300 samples tested in PCR and antigen tests, 1,090 were positive. With the recent additions, the number of active cases of coronavirus infection has gone up to 5,806, the ministry said.

Of those tested positive, 304 are from Kathmandu, 21 from Bhaktapur and 72 from Lalitpur.

Of those testing positive, 171 are in the age group 21-30 - and 93 in the age group 31-40.

Meanwhile 438 people have been discharged from the health centres. With the recent additions, the number of people who have recovered from the infection stands at 973,405.

The recovery rate from the infection is 98.2 per cent across the country.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population 61 people are admitted to the intensive care units, of which 47 are in Bagmati Province, nine in Province 1, four in Lumbini Province and one in Sudurpaschim Province.

Similarly, seven people are given ventilator care. All of them are receiving treatment in health centres in Bagmati Province.

With the rise in the number of coronavirus cases, the ministry has advised people to take vaccines as it helps in lessening the severity from the infection.

Warning of the risk of the coronavirus infection, the ministry advised people to follow the public health measures such as wearing a mask, maintaining social distance, covering coughs and sneezes, maintaining cross ventilation and washing hands and or using sanitizers.
