Nepal Minute - out of the ordinary

Nepal

The Lalitpur Metropolitan City (LMC) will be providing Rs 10,000 as festival allowance to senior citizens.

The allowance will be given to the elders above age 65 so that they will be able to celebrate festivals like Dashain and Tihar with gaiety.

Mayor Chiri Babu Maharjan said that the allowance would be given to the senior citizens once a year during the Dashain festival.

"The senior citizens who are the living history of society would be happy after getting this money. We are taking this initiative so that the elders will not have to depend on their children for festival expenses," he added.

The metropolis used to provide a festival allowance of Rs 5,000 to the senior citizens of the designated age until last year.

There are around 7,000 senior citizens eligible for this allowance in the metropolis.
