Nepal Minute - out of the ordinary

Elections 2022

The Election Commission has revealed that nearly 124 thousand candidates who took part in the local level elections held in May have not submitted their election expense details on time.

According to a press release issued by the EC, it has asked them to clarify why they failed to do so, failing which they might be subjected to “legal action” in accordance with the law.

According to the law, all candidates must submit a detailed account of their expenses to the relevant district or state election office within 30 days of the result announcement.

However, over 115 thousand candidates have not declared their expense details, with only 8,652 candidates belatedly submitting their details, according to the EC.

Asking all the candidates to clarify why they failed to declare expense details on time, it warned “legal taking” action against those failing to show up at the EC with the required documents.

The actions will be according to section 26 of the Election Commission Act, 2073.

The commission has received election expenditure details from 21,230 candidates only.

The candidates who did not present their expense details can submit a statement justifying their action to the election office of their respective districts within seven days.

The election offices of the respective districts need to prepare a consolidated statement of the candidate’s name, address, position at the election and the expense details and submit it to the election commission, says EC.
