At least 13 persons were killed – nine on the spot and four while receiving treatment– on Tuesday
morning when a passenger bus tumbled down a winding hilly road in Ramechhap district, southeast of Kathmandu.
Police said 25 others were injured, four seriously, and were airlifted to Kathmandu.
Among the dead were eight males and five females.
The bus was on the way to Kathmandu from Hiledevi of Sunapati Rural Municipality. It veered
off the hilly road near Khadadevi around 10 am Tuesday. Police said the bus rolled down and landed
roughly 40 metres below the road. The location of the accident lies 20-25 kilometres west of
Manthali, the district Headquarters of Ramechhap.
The bus was making a steep hill climb, Ramechhap’s Chief District Officer Dipak Kumar
Pahadi told NepalMinute.com. “Twenty-two injured are undergoing treatment at Dhulikhel Hospital.
"The bus driver is in police custody.”
More than 2500 people get killed in road accidents in Nepal and thousands get injured. Many survivors are forced to live with lifelong disabilities. Road traffic fatalities also lead to economic losses. Nepal loses 0.8 percent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to road accidents, according to World Health Organization (WHO).
