Three new electric Sajha buses have hit the streets of Kathmandu, following Sajha Yatayat’s move to promote pollution-free electric public buses in Nepal.
The cooperative organisation - which has been getting financial support from the government - plans to add 37 more electric buses around August 1.
The buses are currently getting finishing touches in the Chinese city of Nanjing where they are manufactured, Sajha Yatayat said in a press release.
The founder chairperson of Sajha Yatayat, Bishwa Bandu Thapa inaugurated the formal operation of the three buses, which will operate in the valley as a part of their initial test.
One of the most reliable modes of transport inside and outside Kathmandu in the 1980s and 1990s, Sajha buses faced troubles in the midst of political unrests and upheavals post 1990.
It was given a new lease of life in 2012 after which Sajha buses restarted their engines.
The latest upgradation became possible after the government invested Rs 3 billion, the press release said, adding that plans to import more electric buses to promote environment-friendly mode of mass transit will continue.
