One person died when an avalanche hit Manaslu base camp in north Gorkha on Monday.
Thirty-five-year-old Dawa Tshering Sherpa of Taplejung was killed in the incident on Monday morning, according to the police. He was climbing towards the third base camp at the time.
This is the third fatal incident on the eighth highest mountain in a week. Last Monday, Nepali mountain guide Anup Rai of Sankhuwasabha and famed US mountain skier Hilary Nelson died in two separate avalanche-related incidents.
Senior Superintendent Kedar Khanal of the District Police Office said three of the four people caught in the avalanche came in contact shortly after the incident.
Khanal said a search operation was launched for the missing Sherpa. The search team found his body buried under snow - not far from where he went missing.
SSP Khanal said the body of the deceased mountaineer was recovered and brought to Samagoan with the help of a Simrik Air helicopter. It was later airlifted to the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu for post-mortem.
According to the Gorkha Police, the body will be handed over to Sherpa’s relatives after the post-mortem.
On Sunday morning, the mountain’s second base camp was hit by an avalanche that destroyed about three dozen tents. There were no reports of casualties.
