Nepal Minute - out of the ordinary

Nepal

Continuous rainfall since Wednesday has inundated several settlements in Banke district, displacing at least 3,600 people.

Settlements in Raptisonari, Narainapur and Duduwa rural municipalities were the worst hit by floods triggered by several days of incessant rain.

The flood-swollen Rapti River has displaced 300 households in the Tikulipur settlement of Raptisonari Rural Municipality-2, according to Rupan Gyawali, information officer at the District Disaster Management Committee.

"The displaced are those abandoning homes due to fear,” he said, adding that while some flood-affected people have since returned home, many are still taking refuge in different shelter homes and schools.

The flood has widely eroded areas along the riverbanks.

Likewise, over 300 residents in Krishi Chauferi of Duduwa Rural Municipality and wards 18 and 20 of Nepalgunj Sub-metropolis have also been displaced due to inundation. Flood has damaged 200 houses in Narainapur.

Most of the settlements in six wards of the rural municipality have been waterlogged. Rural municipality chair Istiak Ahamad Sah said that the people in those settlements lacked shelter and food due to inundation.

The people in the inundated area have been living in darkness for the past four days. Several settlements, including Baniya village, Roshanpurawa, Mahatiniya, Bahabpurawa, Gigali, Rataiya, Kautiya, Kodipur and Pachpedawa, Ghoddanriya, Panditpurawa and Jamunaha have been waterlogged, according to Sah.

A District Disaster Management Committee meeting has decided to collect data on the flood survivors and distribute immediate relief in the affected areas. - RSS
