Hospitals in Chitwan district have reported a surge in scrub typhus infections, with 230 new cases.
Of the infected, 108 are from Chitwan, whereas the rest are from outside the district. A total of 1,873 tests have been conducted so far.
In the last fiscal year, out of 3,286 people who underwent screening in the district, 286 tested positive for scrub typhus.
Scrub typhus is caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi, carried by mites and transmitted to humans from their bites.
Fever, chills, reddish eyes, coughing, headache, muscle pain, joint pain, rash and a dark, scab-like region at the site of the bite are the symptoms of the disease.
Similarly, the district has reported 1,155 cases of dengue in the current fiscal year.
Of them, 799 are from within the district, 299 are from outside the district, and the addresses of 177 have not yet been ascertained. – RSS
