Bagmati Province bagged two more gold medals in fencing on Wednesday to finish on top of the medal tally with five medals, including four gold medals at the 9th National Games.
In the competition held at the Pokhara Stadium’s Badminton Covered Hall, Bagmati defeated the Tribhuvan Army Club by 45-35 points in the men's team foil to win their third gold in fencing. Sudurpaschim and Province 1 took home bronze medals.
In the women's sabre team event, Bagmati proved too strong for the Army fencers as they coasted to a comfortable 45-35 victory in the final. The win saw them finish on top of the medal tally with four gold medals.
Earlier, the Army defeated Sudurpaschim 4-1 and Bagmati edged Province 1 by a 3-2 margin to book their place in the final. Sudurpaschim had a bye in the quarter-finals and directly played in the semi-finals. The Armed Police Force (APF) and Province 1 settled with bronze.
In the women’s epee team, the Army won gold in the women's EP competition of Army defeated APF 45-40. Province 1 and Sudurpaschim won bronze.
Bagmati stamped their authority in fencing competition with 5 medals - 4 gold and one silver. The Army finished second on the fencing podium with 14 medals - 3 gold, 5 silver and 6 bronze, and the APF completed the podium with 10 medals - 1 gold, 3 silver and 6 bronze.
Sudurpaschim Province won 1 gold, 2 bronze and 3 medals, while Province 1 won 3 bronze medals and Gandaki won 1 bronze.
Women’s cricket: Samjhana’s sterling fifty in Nepal Police victory
The Nepali Police Club (NPC) continued a great run of form, securing an emphatic 118-run victory over Province 1 in the Women’s T20 competition under the ninth National Games
In a Group B match at the Pokhara Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, Province 1 won the toss and elected to field first.
Province 1 had early success as NPC opener wicket-keeper Payal Thakur caught Kajal Shrestha with only 12 runs on the board.
But Samjhana Khadka joined Kabita Kunwar in the middle, and the pair added 77 runs in quick time before the latter was run out. With a score on 89-2, Aspari Begam teamed up with Khadka and the two put on 42 runs.
Samjhana Khadka became the first batter to score a fifty in the competition. She cracked 60 runs off 43 balls with the help of 10 fours, before being run out with the score at 131-3. Khadka would be named player of the match for her feat, after the match.
Rubina Chhetry joined Begam and the two added unbeaten 27 runs to take the total to 158-3.
Province 1 started miserably as they were bundled out for 40 runs playing all 20 overs they managed a total of 40 runs while losing 8 wickets.
Lumbini make short work of Karnali
Lumbini Province thrashed Karnali Province by 104 runs in the Women’s T20 Cricket competition.
Chasing the target of 128 runs set by Lumbini, Karnali struggled with the Lumbini's bowling attack and surrendered meekly.
Karnali were bowled out for 23 runs in just 8.3 overs. Opener Kiran Kunwar, who scored 5 runs, was the top scorer as none of the Karnali batters could reach double figures.
Madhu DC was the peak of Lumbini bowlers who took 4 wickets giving away 11 runs in 4 overs. Kritika Marasini picked 2 wickets and Sushmita Bhusal took 1 wicket.
Earlier, Lumbini, who won the toss and batted first, scored 127 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs.
For Lumbini, opener Lakshmi Chaudhary scored 31 runs and captain Saraswati GM scored 30 runs. Madhu DC remained unbeaten on 12 runs. Anju Gurung took 2 wickets and Angela Chhetri took 1 wicket for Karnali.
Lumbini now have three points from two games in Group B. Earlier, Lumbini shared the spoils with Province 1 after their match was cancelled due to rain.
Gandaki men going strong in handball
Gandaki Pradesh racked their third victory, beating Bagmati 32-14 in the men’s handball competition under the Games. Gandaki's Vishal Basnet was the top scorer in the match with 6 goals.
