A paraglider representing Nepal Army at the ninth National Games was killed in a freak accident on Sunday, calling into question safety measures at the ongoing sports event in Pokhara.
Twenty-six-year-old fell from an elevation of about 100 metres five minutes after taking off from Sarangkot hill., contracted to the Tribhuvan Army Club, lost control of his glider and fell off shortly after he took off, according to the police.
According to District Police Office Kaski, Thapa, a resident of Pokhara-10 Hospital Chowk, fell from an elevation of about 100 metres five minutes after taking off from Sarangkot hill.
He was rushed to the Metro City Hospital, but he died during treatment around 12:45 pm, the police said.
Paragliders representing Tribhuvan Army, APF, Gandaki, Karnali and Province 1 are competing for top honours in the Games. However, the accident has made the paragliding competition uncertain, with the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal indefinitely suspending all paragliding flights across Nepal.
