The Kathmandu District Court has granted Nepal Police four more days of remand to investigate the rape allegation against Nepali cricket star Sandeep Lamichhane.

The court’s permission came after Police Circle Gaushala sought more time to investigate the rape allegation against Lamichhane, according to Kathmandu District Police Range SP Dinesh Raj Mainali.

The previous five-day remand expired on Tuesday, when Nepal observed a national holiday to mourn the demise of culture historian Satya Mohan Joshi.

A 17-year-old girl had filed a police complaint on September 6, charging Lamichhane with rape. The cricketer was away in the West Indies at that time, playing in the Caribbean Premier League. He has denied the charge.

A month later, on October 6, the police arrested him on arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport.

The police produced him before the Kathmandu District Court for the first time on October 10, asking for seven-day custody starting from October 6. The custody was extended by five days for the second time on October 13.

Earlier, the police obtained a court warrant on September 7 to arrest the 22-year-old cricketer as per the minor girl's complaint filed at the Gaushala Police Circle.
