A fire broke out in Shivpuri Rural Municipality-8 of Nuwakot on Sunday night, causing more than Rs20 million in damage.

Deputy Superintendent Rupak Khadka, spokesperson for District Police Office, Nuwakot, said the fire destroyed three houses and stores, but there was no casualty.

The fire, which started around 9:30 in the night, was brought under control after five hours, and a cooling operation was subsequently carried out to avert any secondary fires. The fire department of Bidur Municipality, along with locals and security personnel, was pressed into action.

According to Khadka, the fire that started in Bijay Thapa's fancy items shop at Sattariko dil spread quickly to Hari Thapa's grocery store and then to Bijay's hardware store, engulfing the goods inside there.

"Three houses of the Thapa brothers, along with goods in the shops, cash, gold and silver, have been destroyed in the incident. A preliminary estimate put the total property damage at Rs22 million," DSP Khadka said. "As the victim's family and the police are more focused on containing the fire, the actual damage could be more than the initial estimate."

Although the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, Bijay Thapa, a fire victim, suspected an electric short-circuit might have sparked the inferno. - RSS
