A charge sheet has been filed against the former captain of Nepal national cricket team, Sandeep Lamichhane, in the Kathmandu District Court for the alleged rape of a minor girl.
The Kathmandu District Attorney's Office registered the case in the court on Monday, demanding up to 12 years of imprisonment against Lamichhane and compensation for the victim under section 219 of the Criminal (Code) Act, 2017. The hearing on the case begins on Tuesday.
Following a joint investigation into the case, the Kathmandu District Police Range and Gaushala Police Circle submitted a report to the attorney's office on October 21.
However, the attorney's office could not register the case at the court due to the Tihar holidays.
On September 6, a 17-year-old girl filed a complaint at the Gaushala Police Circle against Lamichhane, accusing him of rape. The cricketer denies the charge.
He was away in the West Indies at that time, playing in the Caribbean Premier League.
Two days after the complaint registration, the police obtained a warrant from the Kathmandu District Court for his arrest, leading to his suspension from the national cricket team.
Lamichhane was arrested upon his arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport on October 6.
The police produced him in front of the Kathmandu District Court for the first time on October 10, asking for seven-day custody starting from October 6. The custody was extended by five days for the second time on October 13 and four days for the third time on October 19.
